What is the best diet for me?

There is not one “right” diet for everyone. I may have an issue with dairy, while you are just fine drinking milk. I might need to eat a more “fat” focused diet, whereas you may do better with more carbs. I might have an issue with oxalates, you might not do well with glutamates. I drink Kombucha to supply good bacteria for gut health, but you have SIBO and it makes you worse. I might be okay with intermittent fasting,

Autoimmunity and COV1D-19 (2021)

A paper released in the January 2021 edition in Frontiers in Autoimmunity, tested the autoimmune response to COVID-19 on 55 target tissues and organs. They found that “SARS-CoV-2 antibodies had reactions with 28 out of 55 tissue antigens, representing a diversity of tissue groups that included barrier proteins, gastrointestinal, thyroid and neural tissues, and more. “ This implies is that if there is a genetic susceptibility or tendency to an autoimmune condition, and you have an immune response to the virus, you may be triggering

Are your lab tests normal, yet you know that something is wrong?

Have you been told not to worry about it, or that it is just a normal part of aging or worse, that it is all in your head? Chronic conditions don’t occur overnight, but start with subtle changes in physiology. And just like a car’s check engine light, our bodies are equipped with an incredible warning system. Laboratory testing is the gold standard to determine if normal physiology is occurring.  But what is considered normal? You go to your doctor

What is one of the most important things we need to do to improve our health?

Keep our blood sugar balanced. If you can imagine: Being satisfied by good foods without craving sweets? Sleeping throughout the night and waking refreshed? Having so much energy that you accomplish everything to want to do in a day? Feeling relaxed and happy even through the tough times? Being able to focus without distraction or fatigue? Touting a full head of soft shiny hair and beautiful nails? A healthy sex life? A strong well-toned body? Rarely getting sick? Then you

Are your brain cells Trigger Happy?

Do scents, sounds, or movements really annoy you? Are you finding it harder to think?  Does your brain just get tired? I attended Dr. Datis Kharrazian’s PhD master class on neuroinflammation a few weeks ago and had planned on writing about how our brain cells get way too overactive and become too sensitive. Then, I got an email where he wrote about the same thing,  so I won’t even try.  Here it is in its entirety: The neurons in our

Are you waking up Wrong?

Sleep is vital for so many functions including protecting our mitochondria/DNA/brain from damage via the hormone melatonin which is a very powerful antioxidant. Happy mitochondria give us all the internal energy we need to keep us vital and healthy.  Sleep also helps clear cellular debris, repair/replace old cells, bring down inflammation, and generate neurotransmitters. But what if you wake up dead tired? Sleep issues and chronic stress can dampen the morning release of cortisol or something called the Cortisol Awakening

Fermented foods have been around since ancient times and are found in cultures around the world–from Roman sauerkraut to India lassi to Korean kimchi. Just as fermented yeasts are used to make wine, sugars and starches are fermented with lactic acid to produce bacteria such as lactobacillus and bifidobacteria which are vital for our health. Some of the most common fermented foods are listed below. As a note, even though a few of these contain soy (which can be a

The Food 411: Do you Structure your water?

We  all know water is important, but is turns out that its shape might just as important as its quality and quantity. Seriously, could it be all that good water you are drinking is not effectively making it into your cells?  I am no expert on this—frankly, I had my doubts—but strangely enough, it’s true. I had a friend who had suffered from migraines ever since she was a child. Doctors tried everything to no avail…until one progressive MD I

The Food 411: Are you eating your Bitters?

How often do you eat artichoke, parsley, arugula, radicchio, endive, angelica, chamomile, dandelion, goldenseal, horehound, milk thistle, peppermint, wormwood or yarrow? Most of us don’t, but maybe we should be. Research indicates that these foods can help control blood sugar, stimulate digestion, reduce inflammation, control hunger, balance the thyroid and more. So why don’t aren’t they a normal part of our diet? We evolved thinking that if something tastes bitter, we’d better not eat much of it since bitter flavors
